The oppressive skies — so red and heavy with steaming and boiling pyro-cumulus — looming over exploding trees as embers rained down, spreading the terror ahead of a power so awesome that every human witnessed felt insignificant. Yet, that power was magnetic. It was impossible to turn away. This was nature at her most terrible and impressive.
There is no doubt the the 2019 “Black Summer bushfires” had a profound effect on every Australian within their reach. Steve and Jo Starling were lucky, with their home town being completely spared when that southerly swept through and turned the fires back. Too Late To Leave is Jo’s response to those terrifying and exhausting weeks.
